The overshirt has become one of the most useful things a man can own, and also one of the most easy to get wrong. Too slim and it pulls across the shoulders the moment you layer anything underneath. Too boxy and it reads sloppy rather than relaxed. Regular fit is the answer, and it is a more specific thing than it sounds. We mean a cut with enough room through the chest and arms to go over a heavyweight tee or a thin merino without fighting it, but with enough shape to not look like you borrowed it from someone larger. These are the ones we keep coming back to. Worn open as a light jacket in early autumn, buttoned up with trousers for something a bit more considered, or thrown over a hoodie when the weather turns awkward.
