Black cargo trousers had a decade or so in the wilderness and we think they’ve earned their way back. The ones that work now are not the ones you wore to a festival in 2003. The silhouette is cleaner, the pocket placement is considered rather than chaotic, and the fabrics have caught up with what the rest of a decent wardrobe expects. What makes them worth revisiting is the utility they offer without the compromise. A well cut black cargo in a cotton twill or a technical fabric sits comfortably next to a clean white tee and a good trainer, but doesn’t look out of place with a longer overcoat either. The pocket volume matters. Too much and you’re back in festival territory. Just enough and it reads as intentional. We’ve been looking specifically for pairs where the fit through the thigh doesn’t balloon and the black holds after washing. These are the ones that actually delivered.
