Most men own a blue shirt. Far fewer own the right one. Gingham Shirts That Get It Right

Gingham has a habit of looking either exactly right or completely off, and the gap between those two outcomes is smaller than most men realise. The check scale matters enormously. Too large and it reads as tablecloth. Too small and it turns into visual noise from across the room. The sweet spot sits somewhere in between, and the fabric weight has to back it up. Stiff poplin holds the pattern cleanly. Cheaper cotton goes limp by lunchtime and takes the whole look with it. What we like about a well made gingham shirt is how much ground it covers. It works open collar with chinos on a warm weekend. Tuck it in, add a blazer, and it holds its own somewhere considerably smarter. We have been through a lot of these and most fall short on at least one count. Collar roll, fabric quality, fit through the shoulders. The ones here get all three right and then leave room for nothing to complain about.

Navy Shirts That Look More Expensive Than They Are

Navy does a lot of the heavy lifting in a well put together wardrobe and the shirt is where it earns its keep most consistently. It works with grey trousers, with chinos, with denim if the shade is right. It reads smart without trying. The problem is that navy shirts have a wide quality range and a lot of the cheaper end looks exactly like what it is, thin fabric, loose collars, that slightly washed out colour that arrives on arrival. What we were looking for here were shirts that photograph like they cost significantly more than they do, and more importantly, look that way in person. Fabric weight matters. Collar roll matters. The way a shirt holds its colour after ten washes matters considerably more than most people think when they are standing in a shop. These are the navy shirts we would wear to a dinner or a meeting without a second thought, at prices that leave room in the budget for something else.

Pink gets dismissed more than it deserves and that is mostly a confidence problem rather than a colour problem. The men who wear it well are not doing anything complicated. They have just noticed that a well chosen pink shirt does something a white one cannot, adding warmth to a complexion without demanding attention, sitting easily under a navy blazer or with a pair of washed denim in a way that looks considered without being try hard.
