Most chambray shirts are priced like basics and made like basics too. Thin fabric, sloppy collar, buttons that gap after three washes. A properly made chambray sits in a very useful place in a wardrobe. Smart enough to tuck in for a summer lunch, relaxed enough to wear open over a t shirt on a weekend. Corduroy Shirts That Don't Look Cheap

Corduroy is one of those fabrics that rewards you for caring about it. The wrong shirt, and you look like an afterthought. The right one, and there's a texture and warmth to your outfit that no plain cotton can replicate. The problem is that most corduroy shirts are cut too boxy, made from cord that's too thick, or finished with buttons that cheapen the whole thing the moment you look closely. We've been looking specifically at fine to midwale options where the fabric has some drape to it and the construction holds up to the scrutiny a casual shirt actually gets. These work open over a t-shirt, buttoned up under a wool overshirt, or tucked into heavier trousers when the temperature genuinely drops. Earth tones are the obvious choice and the obvious choice is obvious for a reason, but we've also found a few colours worth considering if you want something less expected. Denim Shirts That Hold Their Shape

Most denim shirts fail in the same way. They start well, survive a few washes, and then go baggy at the chest, boxy at the hem, and generally shapeless in a way that makes you look like you've borrowed the shirt rather than chosen it. The fabric is usually the issue. Cheap denim has no real structure to return to once the heat and water have finished with it. What we've been looking for are shirts where the weave is tight enough and the weight is right enough that the shirt holds its lines after repeated wear. The chambray end of the spectrum is too lightweight for this. We mean proper indigo denim, with a cut that works both tucked into trousers and left out over chinos. There is a window in the calendar, roughly from November through to early January, where a velvet shirt stops being a statement and starts being the obvious answer.
