The fleece never really went away, it just spent a decade or so being worn by the wrong people in the wrong places. Green is the colour that does the most work in a casual wardrobe and most men are only just catching on. Not army surplus olive, not the particular shade of green that belongs on a golf course, but the considered midtones and deeper saturated versions that sit well with navy, grey, brown, and denim without needing to be styled around. The fleece had a rough decade or so, buried under ironist nostalgia and tech wear hype, and most of what came out of that period was either too self-conscious or too loud. What actually works is simpler. A plain fleece in a decent weight, well cut, no chest graphics, no unnecessary zips going nowhere, just a collar, a front zip, and fabric that does the job without requiring you to think about it. Grey fleece occupies a strange and specific place in a man's wardrobe. It is not trying to be anything other than what it is, and that honesty is part of why it keeps earning its place. The question is never whether to own one. It is which one is actually worth wearing in public rather than saving for the sofa. We have spent a lot of time thinking about what separates a grey fleece that looks considered from one that looks like it was grabbed from a supermarket aisle. Weight matters.
